CITRUS VARIETIES - SPRING EDITION
Discover the different varieties of citrus fruit that can be found during these months.
CATEGORIES
Spring continues to be citrus fruit season. In Cañamás Hnos we keep on with the national production of the varieties of the second part of the season, which are still available in the main markets and supermarkets to offer consumers a good dose of vitamin C.
Some of the different varieties of citrus fruit that can be found during these months include:
ORRI MANDARIN
The Orri mandarin is the premium variety par excellence of this part of the season. A protected variety, of limited production, whose organoleptic characteristics place it directly on the list of the most eagerly awaited fruits of the year for both producers and consumers.
Now is the time to take advantage of all the properties of this mandarin, in both leafed and unleafed formats, allowing us to enjoy its unique flavour and high-quality fruit. In addition, as the Orri is a seedless mandarin, it is ideal for eating as a table fruit.
As it is a protected variety, it follows high levels of regularisation and production control, ensuring compliance with the most demanding European standards in terms of food safety and environmental protection.
ORTANIQUE MANDARIN
Another mandarin variety that we can find these months is the Ortanique, a perfect mix between an orange and a mandarin. Its main characteristic is its high juice content.
This mandarin has a more adherent skin to the pulp than other varieties, making it more difficult to peel and making it an ideal choice for juice. In addition, its rind gives off a large quantity of essential oils, giving it its characteristic smell. It is a variety that has a good resistance on the tree, so you can still enjoy its full flavour this season.
ORANGE LANE LATE
Considered a late Navel, it is perfect for this part of the season. It is a variety with a very good performance, so its harvesting period is extended until May, due to the large number of sub-varieties that make it up, each one being harvested at its optimum ripening point.
Con un ombligo más pequeño que otras navel, son su piel fina y su pulpa jugosa de sabor suave las que hacen de ella una naranja especial, perfecta para consumir como fruta de mesa.
ORANGE VALENCIA LATE
The beginning of spring brings a change of variety in juice oranges with the arrival of the Valencia-late. As its name indicates, it is a late variety with a harvesting period that lasts almost until June.
The Valencia-late is quickly differentiated from the rest of the varieties by its lack of navel, as it is from a different family to the Navel. This orange, which keeps very well both on the tree and once harvested, is the one that closes our national production campaign.
This is a variety with almost no seeds, with a fleshy, firm and very juicy pulp that makes it an ideal variety for juice (it has a juice percentage of over 45%), although it is also consumed as a table fruit.
GRAPEFRUIT
Grapefruits are still in season, although we are reaching the final part of them. During these weeks, you can continue to enjoy Star Ruby grapefruits, characterised by a reddish flesh with a sweeter flavour than other varieties.
As we have already mentioned on previous occasions, grapefruits are rich in citric acids and vitamins, especially vitamin C, as well as being a great source of hydration, which is why they are great allies in health care.
All the citrus fruit varieties available are perfect for consumption at any time of the day, as part of a healthy and balanced diet. Not forgetting, moreover, that all these varieties are grown using the most sustainable techniques, placing value on the proximity between production and distribution centers and the consumption of seasonal fruit, reducing environmental impact and food waste.
