As a food company, we are always committed to a healthy lifestyle that includes eating plenty of varied, seasonal fruits and vegetables. And as part of the Spanish citrus fruit sector, we promote the consumption of citrus fruits, both fresh and in juice form, for their health benefits.
Orange juice consumption
In the current context, where consumers are looking not only for healthy foods, but also for sustainable and locally sourced products, orange juice is once again at the centre of the nutritional debate. For years, fruit juice consumption has been demonized due to its high sugar content, but it is important to remember that these sugars are naturally present in the fruit and are not added.
However, recent studies agree on one fundamental point: a glass of freshly squeezed 100% natural orange juice, consumed as part of a balanced diet, is not only a delicious drink, but also a food that provides micronutrients and bioactive compounds of interest — such as vitamin C and flavonoids — which contribute to its nutritional and functional value.
In addition, the NFC (Not From Concentrate) model used by the Spanish juice industry preserves the organoleptic characteristics of the fruit, maintaining its natural profile. This model responds to a growing demand for transparency, less processing and greater traceability in the food chain.
Antioxidant benefits
Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C, which boosts the immune system, aids iron absorption and help produce collagen for the skin. They also contain other vitamins, minerals and flavonoids (particularly hesperidin) known for their antioxidant properties and potential anti-inflammatory effects.
These properties are retained when citrus fruits are consumed as juice, particularly if it’s 100% natural juice. Vitamin C and phenolic compounds retain their ability to combat oxidative stress, helping to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Furthermore, when the juice is consumed with pulp, some of the soluble fibre present in the fruit is incorporated, which contributes to a more gradual absorption of sugars.
Overall, both fresh fruit and natural juice allow you to benefit from the antioxidant potential inherent in citrus fruits, integrating easily and pleasantly into a balanced diet.
Diversity of varieties
At Cañamás Hermanos, we offer a wide range of citrus varieties for both fresh consumption and juicing. The varieties most used for juicing are characterised by a lower acidity level and juicy flesh with a high juice yield.
On our farms, we grow different varieties, such as the Ortanique, the Salustiana orange and the Valencia Late, following a sustainable production model that takes care of every stage of the fruit’s development. We look after our citrus fruits from the earliest stages of growth and harvest them at their peak of ripeness to ensure maximum freshness, quality and ideal characteristics for making natural juice.
