SOCIAL ACTION - COMBATING FOOD WASTE
We control food waste through two main areas of action: production management, and food assistance programmes.
CATEGORIES
As a food company, our main mission is to offer society healthy, nutritious, and high-quality citrus fruits. To achieve this, we take great care in every stage of the production process to make the most of our resources and minimise food waste. This philosophy is part of our commitment to sustainability, efficiency, and the social well-being of our community.
From agriculture and food processing to consumption in households, every stage influences the total amount of food that is lost or wasted. This, in turn, has an impact on the environment due to the energy used in food production and the generation of waste. For this reason, at Cañamás Hermanos we control food waste through two main areas of action: production and storage management, and social action through food assistance programmes.
Responsible production and storage
To reduce food waste occurring during the harvesting, storage, and transportation of citrus fruits, we apply production techniques that ensure maximum freshness:
1.Specialisation
Our field teams carry out careful harvesting, collecting each citrus fruit at its optimal point of ripeness to guarantee top quality and avoid unnecessary losses. We also have three packaging warehouses differentiated by varieties, strategically located near our production areas. This reduces the time between harvesting and packing, enabling us to make better use of the fruit and to adapt production to our customers’ demand.
2. Technology and process optimisation
In our facilities, we use temperature and humidity control systems to preserve the freshness of our produce. In addition, technology applied to the categorisation of citrus fruits allows us to make the most of every piece of fruit. Those that do not meet the market’s aesthetic standards but maintain excellent quality are used to produce natural juices.
We also pay special attention to the use of recyclable and reusable packaging materials, which help maintain the quality of our citrus fruits throughout the production chain. In this way, we reduce waste caused by spoilage.
Social Action: food assistance
As part of our ongoing commitment to the social well-being of our community, we allocate part of our export volume to collaborations with Food Banks across Spain. This ensures access to healthy and high-quality products for everyone.
This partnership, involving around 115 000kg in the 24/25 campaign, enables our citrus fruits to reach those most in need. In this way, a piece of fruit that might otherwise be wasted becomes a source of vitamins, energy, and well-being for many families.
We work closely with Food Banks to ensure efficient management of donations while maintaining high standards of food quality and safety. This joint effort not only reduces waste but also strengthens the social fabric of our communities.
Sustainability with purpose
Reducing food waste is much more than a question of efficiency: it is a shared responsibility. Each improvement in how we make use of our fruit represents another step towards a sustainable, and socially responsible production model.
Every action we take — from responsible production management to collaboration with social organisations — reflects our commitment to good agricultural practices and food safety standards.
